Artists.....writers.....musicians.....why do they create, even though it's usually the least profitable and the least safe way to exist in every society?

It's got to be a compulsion.

Some personalities have an almost violent need to create, and many of those have openly admitted that they'd literally go crazy, if they couldn't transfer their psychotic impulses into wild swirls of paint on hundreds of canvasses -- Vincent van Gogh, among others.

Some personalities possess an enormous amount of hatred that would cause them to psychologically or physically harm others, if they were unable to write scary-as-hell novels in which the protagonist murders, dismembers, and otherwise commits heinous acts of rage -- Stephen King, among others.

Some personalities are full of severe psychic pain caused by a traumatic childhood, and will use the act of creation to partially escape such pain by releasing its power into a musical masterpiece -- Pink Floyd's "The Wall", for instance.

Some personalities possess an intense and seldom-satisfied desire for direct interaction with large audiences and the immediate gift of appreciation their applause bestows on them. Such people will outdo even their own expectations, and will often create some of the most beautiful works of art to maintain this high -- Brad Paisley comes to mind.

Then there are those who were born with a spirit that contains a surplus amount of love and creative talent, together with a personality that compels them to express those gifts. Such individuals are the world's great creators. They seek nothing in return for their many gifts of extreme beauty. Their work creates brand-new forms of expression, inspires millions to utilize these forms, and moves their specific area of creative endeavor into a whole new level of evolution -- Bob Dylan's work contains the essence of such power.

Mansfield didn't get a chance to complete even one single sentence, as everything he started to say was immediately and rudely interrupted by Wolf, a truly hate-derived spirit who spoke 95% of the time, and who literally forced him to talk exclusively about her own titanic ego, while snidely accusing him of making her crazy with his archaic male thought-process.

During an entire hour of profoundly abusive and non-stop harassment, Wolf actually inquired if, by his definition, Mansfield thought that using her brain instead of her uterus made her less womanly in his eyes..........and if having a penis gave him more authority than her?

Then, in true, crazy-making fashion, she exclaimed, "I love men to death!"..........and accused this rather sanguine, courteous author of being a misogynist.

At one point, hoping to demolish him via his family relationships, she asked him if he had a daughter, and when he said that yes, he did but that she'd died in an accident, Wolf didn't even have the decency to interrupt her vicious monologue and to express her regret over such devastating loss.

The Hopi Indians believe that everything has a spirit
(many Scandinavians agree with that belief).

The hand-carved Kachina figures made by the Arizona Hopi, are a representation of those spirits, each of which has its own name and its own purpose. Some are believed to bring the rain that will fertilize Hopi crops growing in the arid Arizona soil, some are said to promote inner balance, some were meant to teach a gentle lesson to children, and some bring simple blessings or a sense of well-being.

In a truly generous gesture, the Hopi believe that their Kachinas can influence people beyond their own tribal borders, and that they'll bring good things to all beings everywhere.

I've never bought a Kachina doll. I appreciate folk art for what it represents, but never had the urge to own any of it. No matter where it's from.

I forced myself to listen to our President's press conference. I don't know why. I think I was maybe hoping to hear something new?

The only "new" thing I heard was not a spoken thing but an inferred one, when President Bush never once said that Islam is a religion of peace..........while the changed inference was him sort of saying that they're a bunch of really mean terrorists who want to destroy us.

The President seemed aggressively hostile, while the Press, as usual, was unbelievably rude, narrow-minded, and profoundly uninquisitive. They'll never learn anything new.

During the mid-1990's, a Federal Appeals Court ruled that the arts are protected under the freedom-of-speech guarantee of the Constitution, and that artists would be permitted to show and sell their work on the sidewalks of New York.

Before that decision, Manhattan's artists were subjected to arrests, fines, and confiscation of their work, because they "set up shop" on the city's sidewalks without a street vendor license.

My own town doesn't seem to have any respect for the Constitution. Nor does it regard art as a protected form of freedom-of-speech. Its backward City Council has passed numerous ordinances that forbid artists and performers from using our city's sidewalks for anything.

As a result, my town is deader than dead, void of art and music or other kinds of fun happenings, and even pedestrians avoid using our sidewalks.

So why do we have them?

Listening to a C-Span broadcast of Jaap de Hoop, the Dutch Secretary General of NATO, I became aware of the moments during which he translated his thoughts into English and wondered what kind of impact it has on individuals, when they must express themselves in a language that's not their own.

I've always experienced English as being exceptionally expressive and beautiful. But what was it like, to learn to speak it and to simultaneously also learn to forget the language of my childhood? What happened to my thought process and to my brain, during that time? Does it still affect me today? Has anyone ever studied this?

The Dutchman on C-Span was highly intelligent. Most of the time, his face was scrunched up with the tension of needing to express some pretty convoluted ideas to a group of international journalists. But once in a while, when his English flowed with ease, he would relax, smile, and display a sudden sense of humor.

If I were asked to describe what it's like to exist with a brand-new language, I'd probably say that it's both a severe psychological shock, while at the same time providing an expanded intellectual vision caused by the intense experience of having to absorb a more or less alien culture at the same time.

Living in one's own country, learning to speak English and having fun using it, is not an experience that will impact one's personality. It's the loss of both one's mother-language AND the country of one's birth, that creates a severe and permanent trauma.

Funny......I never thought of it that way.

Our news people have become so profoundly lazy and incompetent, that there's really no way for anyone to understand what the French riots are all about.

I traveled through countless blogs and message boards worldwide, to be able to maybe get some insight into what's been happening overthere, and this is what I heard:

a) France's unemployment rate for people aged 18 to 27, is 25% to 50%.

b) No worker of any age, can be fired (without a court order) from any job, no matter how incompetent their performance.

c) Because they can't fire anyone, employers are perceived as refusing to hire African or Arab immigrants, who therefore exist on welfare and like to riot and burn cars.

c) Villepin tried to change this picture by removing the job-security laws for 18 to 27 year-olds, in the hope that the welfare-group would then get hired.

d) Because no one can get fired and the French workweek is 35 hours and all of its workers get an annual, 6-week paid vacation
-- all of which is a really good deal --
France's 18 to 27 year-olds are rioting to prevent these proposed changes from becoming law.

Late last night, while clicking from channel to channel as I usually do, I saw a few minutes of a TV show that was some kind of performance competition for kids. On its stage was a little boy who looked no more than 6 or 8. He had a giant black cowboy hat on top of his little face and played a giant guitar with his tiny little hands. His hero was probably someone like Alan Jackson or Tim McGraw. Watching this boy, made me think about how incredibly important it is for children (especially male children) to have heroes to emulate, and how terrorists are created by there being no one else but other terrorists, to hero-worship in those backward, medieval, Arab nations that continue to exist as if it were still the fourteenth century.

Such countries are a breeding ground for evil. Ruled by the blaring, oppressive call to prayer, 5 times each day, and by the thousands of crazed preachers who teach only hatred and the need to murder, such nations are like gigantic prison systems that destroy the creative spirit of their children.

These children have no role models. They experience no excellence. There's no music, no art, no writing except for heavily-censored propaganda, no inventors, no builders, and no heroes other than the terrorist exploders of bombs that kill the hated "infidel".

Without any role models of excellence, without a vision of what courage really is, and without experiencing the joy of achievement and mastery, a child will wither like a tree that's planted in a place where water never flows to its roots and sunshine never nourishes its leaves.

Pierre Rehov is a French filmmaker dedicated to exposing the truth about the Israeli-Arab conflict. Since he was born in Algeria, I guess his arabic is legitimate enough so he can go underground in Arab territory and interview/film people without exposing his intentions and endangering himself. He has just completed his sixth film titled "Suicide Killers".

Here's an excerpt from an interview posted on his website:

I never watched the awards ceremony, but was glad to hear that Jon Stewart bombed as he was destined to, and that the 2 terrorist - supportive films were being cut dead. I read the Captain's Quarters account of the affair, and thought his final description did it justice, even though I have no idea what "paucity" means (I'll look it up......promise!):

Well.....having successfully silenced one piercing noise, perhaps I can silence another one as well?

The Monologues came to town, this weekend. I haven't seen them. I have no intention of seeing them. I read the play and know exactly how deeply pathetic it is, in what Michelle Malkin so perfectly described as

VICTIMIZATION
VALIDATION

She was talking at Oberlin about specific groups of black Americans, when she coined that, but it applies to certain groups of female Americans, just as well. In fact.......the destructive theories of black victimization and female victimization were originated by the exact same individuals, who co-opted the magic force of 60's idealism, to establish their own little islands of personal power.

When I first heard that the Monologues were coming to my town, I couldn't have cared less. But when a lot of women I know started to get creatively involved with the politics of this crotch-centered nonsense, I heard that piercing noise again and got rid of my anger
by creating this response to Ensler's retrogressive, quasi-feminist trash.

So why do I still care, you ask?

Because it makes me feel lonely, to be the only one who disagrees with what Shrinkwrapped so apptly calls "the nonsense of 1+1=3".

I'll get over it.

That loneliness, I mean.

I just need a little time, that's all.

It happened when Clinton was president, and it's happening again now: the seeming incompetence of our leadership, won't permit us to live in peace. Instead, we're being forced to deal with all the fighting among those who are in charge and who, like a bunch of spoiled, ill-mannered children, spend their time beating each other up while screaming, "It's his fault.....it's her fault.....it's their fault!"

I'm tired of their antics. Politics is just about the very last thing on this earth that interests me, yet how can I ignore its piercing, constant noise?

Some say that the noise is good and that the tide is turning on many things that were just plain wrong and even dangerous. So perhaps if I can manage to see it like that, the noise won't bother me? Like outsourcing, for instance. It's coming to light now, that some of our largest corporate entities that outsourced IT-jobs like crazy, are now pulling those jobs back into the US, because they've lost more money as a result of consumer outrage, than the pityful amounts they gained by doing their business overseas.

Perhaps the world is not quite as flat as Thomas Friedman thought it was.........or wanted it to be? Perhaps the Dubai Debacle was a necessary evil that forced us to become aware of the fact that financial profiteers have been ignoring every decent standard of doing business, thereby seriously endangering the rest of us?

After all, didn't it just take a real-world war, for the Defense Department to be forced into doing something about the disgusting truth that they've been sending our military personnel into harm's way with inferior weapons, dangerous equipment, and without personal body armor?

Hmmm........it's working..........I don't feel quite as overwhelmed by that piercing noise. Perhaps I can train myself to hear it as the sound of change. The music of progress. The jingle bells of good things replacing the bad and the ugly?

The Center for Security Policy's President Frank Gaffney testified before the House Armed Services Committee, today, and made several recommendations to insure that the 45-day review of the Dubai port deal and all future acquisitions, not be carelessly rubberstamped by the agencies involved in approving them.

This guy is brilliant and insightful. Read what he says. Including the revelation that Dubai is also making a deal [or has already completed one] to take control of some US defense industries!

I swear, this stuff is getting creepier with each passing day, isn't it?

It sure seems as if America is being sold out and destroyed by its own government.

It's like hearing the reverberations of a death rattle.

And while those financial profiteers are grinning into their ugly double chins, our law enforcement agencies at the border have been deserted by these forces of greed, who refuse to provide them with adequate funds, equipment and manpower.
